Today was the day of the Abbey Dash, a race which I had entered and which I have taken part in many times before. However, I have come to it quite a few times previously feeling unprepared, but not as badly so as this time. I simply haven't been out running for ages and couldn't imagine enjoying the experience much at all. It wasn't much of a decision in the end, I just didn't fancy it at all and felt I'd far rather go swimming. I'm really enjoying the tri club swimming sessions, I knew it would get me some good exercise and that I wouldn't ache like I don't know what afterwards! I will have to get back out there and running, but this didn't seem like the way to do it. Dragging myself miserably around 10K didn't have much appeal. Also, the swimming is earlier in the day so I knew I'd have more time left to get all of my work done - a pain but necessary.
Anyway, I think, it turned out really well. I braved the little smattering of snow and 0 degrees temeprature this morning to drive out to Scissett to swim. It was great! There weren't many people there and I had my lane to myself for quite a large proportion of the session. We did a mixture of drills again, including mixed speeds, a fist drill and sprints with a pull buoy. The fist drill was interesting, I'd not done that one before and so found it tricky - more practice required. I found my right hand kept sinking while the left one was coming over.
At the end of the session we did a team relay race, unlike when this is mentioned in the running sessions I felt fine about this and gave it my all. It's funny what a difference it makes. I always feel a bit sick when this is mentioned in running, but today I knew I could hold my own, so I wasn't too worried. In fact, I'd go as far as to say that I enjoyed it. So that was my swim - 1800m in total and a good start to my Sunday.
